About This Group

The Songwriters Circle discovered Songpull.com late in 2006 and hosted their first Songpull in January of 2007. The Songwriters Circle is a group of performing songwriters and their fans in the Kansas City, Missouri area. Since 1993 we have been hosting a new song night on the third Friday of the month at venues that feature live music.

When we found out that there were other cities hosting new song nights, we were really excited. Getting our new songs posted at videos on Songpull.com has really gotten our members energized, writing more and performing more. Songpull, we love ya!

Songpull 20 (15 Aug 2008)
This month I got to the Westport Coffee House with plenty of time to set up. We also had reserved the back room for interviews. Just in case. But when I started interviews at 6:30 pm we only had about 7 songs on the list for that evening. Then as I did interviews, more and more people came to the back room for interviews…with more than one son...

Songpull 19 (18 Jul 2008)
Once again, my friends helped by bringing in the sound gear and setting up ahead of time. I got off work at 5:30 and rushed over to do the interviews. We tried a new interview question, “Tell us about your first date or romance.” This got some interesting responses and some “no comment” responses, but always great “looks” on camera....

Songpull 18 (20 Jun 2008)
I arrived at the Westport Coffeehouse to find that I’d left out two patch cables from the sound gear. Jim found a workaround, but we started on interviews late. Someone had booked the back room where we have been doing interviews so I took us outside. The camera did not do well with a sunny white wall. We ended up starting the first song at 7:...

Songpull 17 (16 May 2008)
I have just started working till 6:00 p.m. and usually I arrive with all the Songpull gear at 5:30 at the coffeehouse. Luckily, many Songwriters Circle members pitched in to get us set up. Kaye and Michael Johnston let me bring over the sound gear and they took it over to set it up. Jim Herrmann and Rick Malsick helped get the sound going for us, to...

Songpull 16 (18 Apr 2008)
We got ready to do the interviews for this Songpull and my video camera started zooming in all the way by itself. This is the second time at this venue it has been possessed. When I get home it is fine. So the interviews were zoomed out all the way and I had to hold the zoom control button down the whole time. When we went back to film the new songs...

Songpull 15 (21 Mar 2008)
Some of our regulars were back this time…and with two new songs. We had three new songwriters come and share 30 day songs. This may have been our best night for getting good interviews from a new question. We asked about a disaster they remembered from a gig. Enough of our members are playing out that we got some “whoppers?. We had some wil...

Songpull 14 (15 Feb 2008)
I was worried about this Songpull. It just happened to fall on the same date as a John McCutcheon concert. (Many songwriters in town go to his concerts.) AND my buddy who handles the recording to the laptop for us at the Songpull, Jim Herrmann, was opening for John. My co-host, Kaye Johnston, was at band practice. She handles the greeting, signups,...

Songpull 13 (18 Jan 2008)
We took our time and started 15 minutes late. (This is rare.) We did the usual interviews and we added comments about the Songwriters Circle of Kansas City. (www.SongwritersCircle.org) This is in the Outtakes as “What is this Songwriters Circle?? We had some great new songs and lots of people there at the party. We had new people who didn’t...

Songpull 12 (21 Dec 2007)
It had been a very cold and snowy December for Kansas City. This close to Christmas, there were songwriters who wanted to come, but had parties and families to attend to. We had 11 new songs and one re-write. Instead of our usual venue, we were welcomed to Main Street Coffeehouse for the December Songpull. It was really decorated for the season. Jim...

Songpull 11 (16 Nov 2007)
Two new songwriters. DT lives in Boston and found out about our Songpull and had a new song to share. We had more sound system trouble. (I think it is the bank of computers in that room.) And, my main camera went haywire. (It is fine now.) Many of us had blips and bloops in our new song performances. (Let me try that again.) But they let us move the...

Songpull 10 (19 Oct 2007)
The Songwriters Circle turns 15 years old this month. I figure this was our 178th new song set. It was our first night at Westport Coffeehouse. It is a big improvement over our former location. Space was limited, but it felt great playing to a full house all night. Several people wandered in and stood and listened for over a half hour till they coul...

Songpull 9 (21 Sep 2007)
Wow. Another 15 song night. And a new record for songs in one month for a Songpull. Jim Herrmann brought 5 new songs written on vacation and ready to record. We used a new light for the video so the camera footage looks better. This is our last Songpull at Toto’s Coffeehouse. Next month we start at Westport Coffeehouse upstairs. It will be tight,...
